Ingredients & Sourcing
Named Dog Food Ingredients and Sourcing
What's in Every Atlantean K9 Recipe
Every ingredient in every Atlantean K9 recipe is named, sourced, and listed because it does something. No animal derivatives. No unnamed cereals. No maize. Built by a former UK Special Forces K9 handler — because in the field, what goes into the bowl matters.
Named Proteins. Known Origin. Listed First.
UK law requires ingredients to be listed in descending order by weight. The first ingredient is the largest by proportion. In every Atlantean K9 recipe, that first ingredient is a named animal protein — not a derivative, not a blend, not a mystery.
British Free Range Chicken
UK Sourced — Free Range
A widely tolerated, highly digestible protein rich in essential amino acids. Supports lean muscle maintenance and daily energy. The most versatile protein in the range — suits most dogs including those with sensitive digestion.
Scottish Salmon
Scotland — Certified Fisheries
Naturally rich in EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. Supports coat condition, skin health, joint comfort and cognitive function. A good choice for dogs with sensitivities to common land proteins.
Angus Beef
UK Sourced — British Farms
High in iron, zinc and B vitamins. Supports strong muscle development, body condition and recovery after exercise. A rich, palatable protein particularly well suited to active and working dogs.
British Grass-Fed Lamb
UK Sourced — Pasture Raised
A novel protein for dogs that have been on chicken or beef-based diets. Highly digestible, well tolerated by sensitive dogs, and a good amino acid profile for lean muscle support. Naturally rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).
English Country Duck
UK Sourced
An ideal novel protein for dogs with sensitivities to common proteins. Lean, highly digestible, naturally palatable. A strong choice for dogs that are picky eaters or have been on the same protein for a long time.
Hydrolysed White Fish
EU Certified Fisheries
Pre-digested protein broken into smaller peptide chains for ultra-fast absorption. Used in the Peptides Series for dogs needing highly targeted nutrition — seniors, rehabilitation dogs and those with digestive sensitivities or intolerances.
Grain-Free Carbohydrates. Named Sources Only. No Maize.
We don't use maize, unnamed cereals or rotating grain blends. Every carbohydrate in our recipes is named and chosen for digestibility, steady energy release and gut comfort.
Sweet Potato
Primary carbohydrate source — grain free
Low-glycaemic, high in dietary fibre and naturally rich in beta-carotene. Provides sustained energy without blood sugar spikes. Well tolerated by the vast majority of dogs, including those with sensitive digestion. Used across the Performance Series as the primary carbohydrate source.
Potato
Secondary carbohydrate source — grain free
A clean, easily digestible carbohydrate that contributes energy density and recipe balance. Used alongside sweet potato to calibrate the caloric profile of each recipe to the intended life stage and activity level.
Named Oils. No "Oils and Fats" Catch-All Terms.
Unspecified "oils and fats" is one of the most common vague terms in UK dog food. We name every oil source and state why it's there.
Salmon Oil
Cold-pressed — omega-3 source
Rich in EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids that support joint comfort, coat condition, skin health and cognitive function. A primary oil source across the Performance Series, included at levels that make a measurable difference to coat and mobility.
Sunflower Oil
Cold-pressed — omega-6 source
A natural source of omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E. Supports skin condition and coat quality. Used in a balanced ratio with omega-3 sources — the omega-3 to omega-6 balance matters for managing inflammation and keeping skin healthy.
Ingredients You Won't Find in Any Atlantean K9 Recipe
These are some of the most common ingredients in mass-market UK dog food. None of them appear in our formulas — and here's exactly why.
| Ingredient | What it means | Our position |
|---|---|---|
| Animal Derivatives | A legal catch-all covering any part of any warm-blooded animal — from any species, in any combination, varying batch to batch. You cannot know what's in it. | Not used |
| Cereals (unnamed) | Covers wheat, corn, barley, oats or any rotating grain blend. A common trigger for skin irritation, loose stools and digestive inconsistency in sensitive dogs. | Not used |
| Maize | A high-glycaemic, cheap carbohydrate filler with poor digestibility in dogs. When listed near the top of an ingredients list it makes up a significant portion of the food. | Not used |
| Unspecified Meat Meal | Concentrated protein from unnamed animal sources. No traceability, no consistent quality. Named meat meal (e.g. chicken meal) from a specific source is different — unnamed is not acceptable. | Not used |
| Artificial Colours | Makes food look appealing to dog owners. Zero nutritional value, zero benefit to dogs. Sometimes linked to sensitivities and behavioural issues. | Not used |
| Artificial Preservatives | Cheap shelf-life extenders. Linked to sensitivities in some dogs. We use natural preservation methods instead. | Not used |
Where Atlantean K9 Dog Food Is Made and Where Our Ingredients Come From
UK-first sourcing wherever possible. Every protein source is named and traceable. All recipes are manufactured in the UK to FEDIAF standards with controlled batch production and ingredient traceability at every stage.
Animal Proteins — UK and certified EU farms and fisheries
British Free Range Chicken, Angus Beef, British Grass-Fed Lamb and English Country Duck are all UK sourced. Scottish Salmon comes from certified Scottish fisheries. Hydrolysed White Fish is sourced from EU-certified fisheries. Every protein source is named on the label.
Production — Manufactured in the UK to FEDIAF standards
All Atlantean K9 recipes are produced through controlled UK-based batch manufacturing. Ingredient intake checks, production quality controls and batch traceability are applied at every stage. FEDIAF (the European Pet Food Industry Federation) sets the nutritional and safety standards our recipes are produced to.
Minerals — Chelated forms for maximum bioavailability
We use chelated mineral forms wherever possible — minerals bonded to amino acids for significantly higher absorption rates compared to inorganic mineral forms. Your dog absorbs more of what's actually in the bowl.
Four Principles Behind Every Atlantean K9 Recipe
Named protein listed first — always
The protein source is the single most important ingredient in your dog's food. In every Atlantean K9 recipe it appears first on the label because it makes up the largest proportion of the food. It is always named — you know the animal, you know the origin, you know what you're feeding.
Every ingredient earns its place
If something appears on our ingredients list it's there because it does something specific. Vegetables, botanicals, oils and minerals are all present for a nutritional reason — not to make the label look impressive or to add weight cheaply.
Full transparency on every product page
The complete ingredients list and analytical constituents for every recipe are published on the individual product page. We publish protein percentages, fat content, fibre, ash and moisture. Read them before you buy — that's exactly what they're there for.
Built from real-world canine performance experience
Atlantean K9 was founded by a former UK Special Forces military K9 handler who went on to run Pawseidon, one of the UK's leading canine hydrotherapy and rehabilitation centres. In the field, nutrition is never guesswork. Weak fuel shows quickly — in performance, recovery and long-term condition. Every recipe in our range is built on that standard.
Ingredient and Sourcing Questions — Answered
What is animal derivatives in dog food?
Animal derivatives is a legal catch-all term that can include any part of any warm-blooded animal — organs, bone, connective tissue, fat — from any species, in any proportion that can change between batches. It doesn't have to specify which animal or which part. Atlantean K9 uses no animal derivatives in any recipe. Every protein source is named and consistent.
Is Atlantean K9 dog food grain free?
Yes — all Atlantean K9 Performance Series and Peptides Series recipes are grain free. We use sweet potato and potato as primary carbohydrate sources rather than wheat, corn, barley or unnamed cereals. Always check the specific product page for the full ingredients list of each recipe.
Where is Atlantean K9 dog food made?
All Atlantean K9 recipes are manufactured in the UK through controlled batch production facilities operating to FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) nutritional and food safety standards. Our animal protein sources are UK and EU sourced — Scottish Salmon from certified Scottish fisheries, and land proteins from UK farms.
Does Atlantean K9 dog food contain maize?
No. Maize does not appear in any Atlantean K9 recipe. Maize is a high-glycaemic, low-digestibility carbohydrate filler commonly used in mass-market dog food because it's cheap. We use sweet potato and potato instead — both grain free, both named, both significantly more digestible.
What is the protein percentage in Atlantean K9 dog food?
Protein percentages vary by recipe and are published in the analytical constituents section on each product page. Performance Series adult recipes typically contain 28–32% protein. Check the individual product page for the exact figure for each recipe and bag size.
Is Atlantean K9 suitable for dogs with sensitive stomachs?
Many dogs with sensitive digestion do well on Atlantean K9 because the recipes use named, single protein sources and grain-free carbohydrates. The Peptides Series Sensitive Stomach and Digestive Care recipe uses hydrolysed white fish — a pre-digested protein that is particularly easy to absorb. If your dog has a diagnosed medical condition, consult your vet before changing diet. See the Peptides Series for targeted options.
Do I need to add supplements to Atlantean K9 dog food?
All Atlantean K9 recipes are formulated as complete foods for the life stage shown on the product. You should not need to supplement a complete, balanced diet when fed correctly according to the feeding guide. If your dog has a specific medical requirement, speak to your vet before adding supplements.
How do I transition my dog onto Atlantean K9?
Transition gradually over 7 to 10 days to avoid digestive upset. Start with 25% Atlantean K9 and 75% current food for the first three days, then 50/50 for days four to six, then 75/25 for days seven to nine, then 100% from day ten. For dogs with sensitive digestion, extend the transition to 14 days. Most owners report firmer stools and steadier energy within the first two weeks.
